Are you Anybody, Somebody, Everybody, or Nobody?

“This is a story about four people named
Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and
Everybody was asked to do it.
Everybody was sure Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it but
Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when
Nobody did what Anybody could have done.”

Whose job was it? Whose job is it?

I would love to give credit to whoever wrote this, but Google points me nowhere except that it is an “English language exercise”. It could have been written by Somebody, Anybody, Nobody, or Everybody…see what I did there?

Regardless, I read this a few years ago and it stuck with me. When I think about where we are as Earthlings on Earth and the existential situation that we have put ourselves in when it comes to climate change and habitat destruction, we are all of the above.

  • Anybody can make a positive impact when it comes to the environment

  • Nobody actually does anything because they think

  • Somebody else (individual corporation or government) is responsible when

  • Everyone should be doing something small every day

So it is time to take action. With every choice that we make daily. With every dollar that we spend With every conversation that we have. It makes a difference. And as Jane Goodall says “You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”

Choose to make a net positive difference.
