Eat to Live
The food you eat can either be the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the sloweset form of posion - Ann Wigmore
I can get into the biology of carnivores vs omnivores, I can get into how every spiritual/religious background practices a form ao fasting, I can get into the actual science of water fasting (intermittent and prolonged) but I don’t want to bore you. We all know that food is fuel and that we are what we eat. We know that sugar is bad. And now more than ever, we know how bad it is for the environment: what is now deemed conventional and normal is factory farming for animals; and for our fruit and veg, it is common practice to use pesticides and mono-agriculture.
So why do keep punishing and poisoning ourselves with the antibiotics fed to animals, consuming their fear.
When you choose to eat better, fresher, organic, seasonal, it might be more expensive outright, but in the long term, you will be paying less in hospital bills when it comes to dis-ease; and in the mid-term, you will generally consume less because nutritionally, you are actually eating more. More grains, more dark greens, more lentils and beans. And in Southeast Asia, more tropical fruits.
In Avatar, when the Na'vi kill an animal they speak a prayer to show respect, gratitude and humility. In Na’vi, it is" “Oel ngati kameie, ma tsmukan, ulte ngaru seiyi irayo. Ngari hu Eywa salew tirea, tokx 'ì'awn slu Na'viyä hapxì” which translates to “I see you brother, and I thank you. Your spirit will run with Eywa, while your body will remain and become part of the People”.
If respect was paid to food like the way of the Na’vi, we would all be healthier and happier. This is as close as we get in the 21st century. If all restaurants we like this, I would eat animals more often. It is not just the craftsmanship, creativity, and gastronomy of the dishes the chefs create. It is about not wasting anything. It is about farm to table. It is about respecting the plants and animals, and the Earth and water they need to grow.
